Taken - Starring Liam Neeson

With respect to Tiara, who reported on this in the Future Movie Releases thread

I thought Taken deserved it's own thread and I have a trailer link here too.

Check it out - Taken Trailer

I'm very intrigued. With Neeson in the lead it takes a so-so concept and makes it worth a watch.

Another film in this vein is Arthur Penn's 1985 thriller, Target, starring Gene Hackman and Matt Dillon. Very much worth a watch.

Stealing Tiara's poster link too! ;)

This is a link for the UK poster provided by Jay.

I was reading around and it seems like the UK poster came under a little fire for being kind of Matrixy.

Maybe not the vibe they really wanted. I thought it was pretty slick, but I do like the US one-sheet better.

And I also like the tag-line or whatever you want to call it.

Looking forward to this - 1.30.09

Tim, this is the flick I was talking about when we were at Western Costume. It's written and produced by Luc Besson and directed by the guy who did DISTRICT B13. I saw the trailer a while back and it was pretty sweet. Really looking forward to this one.

Strange, IMDB is showing that Taken has only received a UK release to this point.

It's possible you saw an advanced preview.

Everything I'm reading is still reporting release in US on the 30th of January '09.

I'm ready now.

I actually saw it at the beginning of this month. There were a couple of guys with clipboards and what appeared to be surveys of some sort? There weren't a whole lot of people either. Maybe it was an advanced preview.

Yeah, you probably got treated to some kind of test screening.

I hope they market it worth a shit. I'll see it the Sunday night of it's opening weekend just in case.

You lucky dog.

Palmiotti has me salivating to see this.

It doesn't dissappoint, man. It's an all-around solid movie. Liam Neeson is a bad ass through out, in every sense of the word.

This looked and sounded awesome until I heard it was rated PG13. These kind of revenge movies never work for me unless you see the violence!

Trust me, the violence is there. I'm actually shocked that it's rated PG-13. I would have never thought that after seeing it.

All these different posters are generic blah. Thanks for posting them though!

Interesting to see what other countries do with the assets.

The one at the top of this thread is still hands down my favorite.

Got a chance to view a screener of this the other night.

Will post thoughts soon. One thing I do want to mention, the violence and action is top notch.

Shows you can fill 2/3rds of your movie with some good, tough, neck-breaking shit and still get a PG-13 rating.

It felt like R to me too.

In the next few weeks, quite a few bloggers will debate whether Liam Neeson gives Jason Bourne and James Bond a sharp chop to the throat in the fluid, under-the-radar actioner Taken. Today, FirstShowing.net swept away its weekly confetti and threw a fresh parade solely to redirect 20th Century Fox’s attention to their film. The much-maligned studio is “dumping” Taken—which has already been released everywhere except for America—in late January after forgoing a release date for this past September. The verdict? I’m not sure if Neeson’s equally skilled “preventer” could murder someone with, oh, a whisk, but the “real world” he inhabits would definitely make the PG-13 Bourne sob inside his 1,000th borrowed Audi.

Taken does for today’s international sex trade what Paul Schrader’s memorable Hardcore did for the darker side of California’s porn economy in ‘79. Like with Hardcore, the audience gradually discovers a lawless, albeit much grander, subculture of greed, sex and death through the eyes of an accomplished actor most audiences see as morally upstanding (Neeson here, George C. Scott there). But this film’s (accurate?) presentation of highest-bidder sin is even more effective IMO. Neeson’s character, named Bryan Mills, is on such a lean, linear and kick-ass mission of shoot/stab/kill, that viewers are required to contemplate the potential for female enslavement in the world market at breakneck speed. Moreover, Mills’s implied past as a government mercenary-type leads you to believe that he’s all-too-aware of this flush criminal labyrinth as he rushes through it: unsettling, and yet awesome.
