The Punisher

Recommended Posts

Hot Rods of Death and Get Castle were some of the better Punisher things to come out last year.

Tom, you and Tim should hit up Marvel and pitch them a one-shot or a mini, maybe put a bug in there ear when/if they get Frank moving again in the right direction film-wise ;)

Get Castle was a great little story. I love the way Frank starts to questions himself after he hesitates shooting a drug dealer at the beginning. It’s nice to see a little bit of internal life to Frank and that he’s not just a heartless machine. The ending with the helicopter is a bit OTT but it works.

I’ve heard good things about Punisher Max: Kingpin. Anyone read it?

Punisher MAX: Kingpin is pretty good if you ask me. I haven't read a Castle/Kingpin comic in a long time and this gives you an origin of Fisk and how he worked his way up....plus Dillon's art is a fuckin plusssss

Yeah, the Aaron MAX run seems to be pretty good. Too bad the Bullseye arc has been delayed for a while now.

The new issue is out now. Only took, what was it, 4 months? Aaron's run seemed to have taken a while for me to get into. I loved the one-shot he did before they ended the first MAX series. Deffinatly better than the others that had taken the reigns, but I was hoping for stories with the depth of Scalped.

The new issue is starting to point in a more complex direction. Guess I set my expectations too high from the start and didn't allow him to build a foundation. This could be a good run. Punisher fans need one.

Scalped is soooo damn good.

I enjoyed Franken Castle but in a different way than a typical Punisher story, which is how I guess it was supposed to be enjoyed? Something different and very cool. Remender does a lot of cool shit.

Imagine TJ as Fear Agent? I could go for that.

I was watching The Deer Hunter last night and I've always thought DeNiro, back in the day, would have been an amazing Frank. The first Vietnam scene would have fit perfectly for a BORN type flashback. Check it out at 5:40.

Walken would have made a kick ass Jigsaw.

I was really disappointed that they had to just return everything back to status quo by the end of the story. Really, anyone can pretty much ignore the Franken-Castle arc and not miss a beat.

While I usually hate whenever someone says "well what they should have done..", but I was hoping for some kind of conflict about whether he would want to turn back into a human. As this giant hulking beast he was 10 times stronger and could take more damage than before (a sword through the bloody throat!).

But that's what I get for really getting into a major publishing book.

FrankenCastle? ? what the HELL is the world coming too?

what's SCALPED? that sounds cool....

Scalped is pretty great, the basic idea is it's a crime comic that takes place on an Indian reservation. Jason Aaron who is currently writing Punisher MAX created it. Tim actually did a few covers for it a while ago, definitely check it out.

It's really not too bad. I'll never refer to it as a landmark story in the Punisher mythos, but it is a fun story. Plus, when the art is on, it's real good.

Plus it was nice seeing Marvel do something with their monster characters.

Like Mike said, it's a crime comic that takes place on an Indian reservation. SCALPED is probably one of the best titles going on the Vertigo imprint right now.

It goes back and fourth between current times and the 70's when federal officers where killed. Nitz was an officer who survived and now is seeking vengence, using Gina's son (who took part in the ambush that killed the feds) Dash.

Dash is sent in undercover to spy on Red Crow who is current Chief and runs the newly opened casino. Things get more and more twised as Dash is struggling with his own demons and also torn between doing what Nitz wants (and could care if Dash is killed) and what Red Crow expects from Dash, who is taken on by Red Crow. It's kind of a mix of The Godfather and State of Grace with Native Americans instead of Italian/Irish mobsters. Lots of grit, lots of story. Aaron is nailing it with this one. Great title. HIGHLY recomended.

Tim did three covers, 18, 19 and 20.

I really liked The Punisher: The End one-shot from a few years ago too. Pretty bleak but it has some nice black humour too. And the ending is perfect.

Yeah, that was pretty great. The perfect ending for the character, the last page is great. I also loved that they got Richard Corben to do the art for it.

Of the Ennis one-shots, The Cell is my favourite. Ennis writing and Larosas doing the art, that's The Punisher... for me atleast.

Yeah, and considering how important of a story was, it's surprising that Marvel really didn't do much with it. It was just released as another one-shot.

Also, this what I've gleaned regarding the time line of the Ennis stories. It goes Born, The Tyger, The Cell and then In the Beginning and so on with the MAX series. I kinda wish Ennis would do a sort of Year One/Year Two story in the MAX universe, show a younger angrier Frank just starting out.

Scalped is easily my favorite book, especially when Guera's on the art but even when he's not the stories move. Sometimes it's like your standing right there with the characters watching the scene unfold.

Just moving as hell.

That's a great idea Mikey. Mannn a Year One with Ennis' take could be amazing. I think Abnett and Lanning did a great job with the Punisher Year One set for the time it was done.

But yes.... Ennis doing a Punisher Year One for MAX, Goddd I can only imagine how perfectly it will be written from him. Have our Timmy do the covers and possibly Dillon with the interiors...Does it get any better than that?

Speaking of the original Year One story, I just found out that Marvel finally put out a trade for it a while back. Though for some reason they decided to use one of Ariel Olivetti's covers from the recent Punisher War Journal comic and not one of the great covers from the actual comic.

That's true enough but when it is said and done I now look at any Punisher comic story as being a TJ comic, buts maybe just me! Lol
