"Lola" by Brillante Mendoza

Now that I think of it...

There's also the movie Lola that I would highly recommand. Pretty sure Chris Sue and Al would like it.

It's a movie from the Philippines from 2009. As far as I know Lola means Grandmother. There are so many layers in this movie: the setting is a slum in Manila, so you get to discover the very simple life of the main characters. There's also the son in prison and the death of someone as the starting point of the movie, so a bit of crime. And there are the relations between the characters and the short term/long term implications of one's actions on her/his life and the one of others.
