HOLY CRAP BATMAN!!!

Foresight Unlimited just released this new movie still from the upcoming action film “Universal Soldiers 3″ aka Universal Soldiers: The Next Generation by director John Hyams (One Dog Day, Rank) and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme (JCVD, Karate, Street Fighter), Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables, The Shooter, Rocky IV), Zahary Baharov and Jon Foo (Tekken).

Synopsis: A crazed Chechen nationalist, BASAYEV, seizes control of Chernobyl, site of the infamous nuclear meltdown, and threatens to unleash a radioactive cloud unless his nationalist blackmail demands are met.

LUC DEVERsEAUX (Jean-Claude Van Damme) joins a U.S. team of revived UniSoldiers secretly held in deep storage. Their mission: retake Chernobyl and disable explosives that will unleash the radioactive clouds. Luc is surprised when he finds one of the reactivated UniSoldiers is a clone of his old Sergeant, ANDREW SCOTT (Dolph Lundgren). But the cloned Andrew has no recollection of Luc.

As the team furiously battles its way into the Chernobyl plant, they are caught off guard. Using a mind-control chip, Baseyev turns Andrew against his own comrades. Now surrounded, wounded, and out-numbered, Luc must battle Andrew, and save the world.

Got this on DVD a few weeks ago and loved it. It’s a lot better than a DTV sequel to a 20 year old Van Damme film has any right to be. The action is brutal and well shot (the film makes good use of long flowing shots instead of always relying on quick cut editing). The photography is great. The synth score reminded me of a John Carpenter film which can only be a good thing.

The acting as well was pretty decent. Dolph in particular does a great job with what’s essentially a cameo. There’s not much of a story to chew on, you can sometimes see the budgetary stretch marks and the female characters don’t have a lot to do but that aside I really thought it kicked ass.

I watched this yesterday and was very surprised at how good it was. A cut above your standard DTV fair. In fact I liked this more than the first film.

Maybe it was just me, but watching the new guy, I was kept seeing a younger Punisher. Some of the look, the killer instinct, and the brutality to his actions. Made me wish Hyams would have taken a stab at WarZone.
