Music: what are you currently infatuated with?

Recommended Posts

Sure! My taste in music is pretty all over the place, but I'll list a few bands I love:

My Bloody Valentine, The Sundays, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cocteau Twins, Elastica, Garbage, Primal Scream, This Mortal Coil, Portishead, The Stone Roses, Bjork (The Sugarcubes), Kate Bush, The Cure, The Charlatans UK, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, The Breeders, Chapter House, Veruca Salt, Republica, The 5, 6, 7, 8's, Mazzy Star

..... to name a few! How 'bout you?

Hey Amy -

If you check out the 2nd page of this thread, I actually did up a list of a lot of the bands/singers I like (and also mentioned that I have a music site at Yahoo Groups).

There's definitely a ton of overlap in our music tastes.

Out of the short list you wrote, I also love MBV, JAMC, Cocteau Twins, Portishead (have you heard their new album?), The Sugarcubes (and Bjork hypothetically - I still don't think she's reached her full potential as a solo artist), Kate Bush, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees (I'm currently trying to write up a review of Mantaray), The Smiths... and most of the other ones you listed I at least like... :)

Other faves of mine are Lush, Curve, Cranes, QueenAdreena, Muse, Depeche Mode, Placebo, Blood Red Shoes, Sons And Daughters, Secret Shine...

Oh, the list could go on 'n' on, but I'll try to contain myself...

Are you on MySpace at all? I'm there with a music profile. If you want, or anyone else here wants to, add me as a friend there:

http://www.myspace.com/sidewaysgaze

My Top 10 "friends" there is a mixed-bag right now of some old/some new bands/singers. Kites is cool in an epic, Muse-like way, The Twilight Sad is depressing and uplifting at the same time (bitter lyrics, but big, ascending guitars)...

I wanted to add Frighten The Horses, but Tom isn't accepting any friends from the looks of it. Well, I mean, he has plenty of other stuff to do than add friends to a MySpace page!

Cool Fred! :D

I just added you as a friend there. I'll check out your profile soon. I just love MySpace for all the music capabilities it offers. Somehow I just can't get into Facebook yet. I don't think it does quite the same thing for music-oriented profiles...

And now, for your viewing (uh, I mean, listening "pleasure"), the many incarnations of KatieJane Garside:

Jolene / QueenAdreena (cover of Dolly Parton song):

and

Medicine Jar / QueenAdreena (one of the band's more recent songs):

and

Lost Upon the Flame / KatieJane - solo:

and

Love Your Money / Daisy Chainsaw (her earlier band that had a "hit" with this song, at least on the alternative charts):

Lights in the Sky - The Slip - NIN

Nice one. My current fave NIN song is In This Twilight. Beautiful and moving. One of Trent's "softer" songs, but he really achingly, yearningly emotes on this one, and I have to say, I think it's the highest he's ever sung, on the chorus part! LOL

Here's a link to an unofficial, but cool video of this song (there are some great visuals that tie into theme of song):

Au contraire dear, the highest he has ever sung was on 'The Perfect Drug' on the Lost Highway soundtrack.

Jeremy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCS_-DshXek

I remember seeing this video on MTV when it came out. From what I've heard that the song was inspired by a newspaper article Vedder read about a kid who killed himself in front of his classmates.

Chilling ending.

You know, I think I misunderstood the ending ever since that video first aired. I thought that in the end, "Jeremy" is shooting his classmates, because you see blood (well, red) on the shirts of some of the kids, plus, before that, you see a strobe light/blam-blam shooting effect while looking at "Jeremy's" face, so I just figured he was shooting at other students...but I guess not!

I like how Eddie Vedder lets loose vocally near the end of the song.

Ohhh, thanks for adding the link to the I Adore You / Queen Adreena video! I love that song/video too and didn't see it on YouTube when I was doing up my links...

I love Skin's vocals on the chorus for Secretly; going into operatic territory.

My personal fave of Queen Adreena songs is In Red, but I couldn't find the original song at YouTube, so here's some concert footage of KatieJane and company - her vocals are great 'n' raw, but don't match the video footage shot at two different gigs. It gets kinda wild by the 2-minute mark, visually and vocally:

Yeah, that was an uncut version of that video where you see Jeremy puting the gun in his mouth.

Haven't watched that Jeremy video in YEARS. Jeez, the song still holds up pretty well.

Once upon a time I was a pretty massive Pearl Jam fan, even liked them before Vedder when they were Mother Love Bone.

And I still play my Temple of The Dog CD all the friggin' time too. Just one of those CD's that's stuck with me over the years. It was stolen from my work place in Tampa, along with a huge book of CD's I had there, and a book of art archive CD's as well.

I figured I'd never see any of that stuff again, but three months later some guy from Boston calls, says he has a book of CD's that his kid brother had, and he looked in the art archives and found the illustrator file with the companies business card layout in it, and called us up. His brother had been arrested up there, and he said he was returning anything he could that his brother had stolen.

He shipped it to us, and I got back almost all my music CD's, and we got back about 80% of the art archives as well.

Sorry for the tangent.

:)

So my girlfriend burns me a CD from her I-tunes and I like 1 song on the whole thing.

This one.

I don't care for this guy, but the guitar work and over all vibe of this song are really cool.

If you can get past the crappy video, the song is awesome.

Another 90's music video I remember from MTV.

Those wacky enlarged eyes on peeps are disconcerting... :P

I like Fell On Black Days by Soundgarden. Vid is here; nothing amazing image-wise; just the band playing, but the moody melancholia of song is "nice":
