The Punisher: WarZone

Recommended Posts

But keep in mind the case of last year's The Mist, which was released Thanksgiving weekend. Weinstein thought the same thing, that it would be the perfect alternative to release a horror film amongst other happier fare. And The Mist tested off the charts too, yet when it was released it failed and was pulled quickly. Say what you want about the depressing ending, I doubt the opening weekend crowd knew what they were in for. After opening weekend this may have been a factor. But the real fact is that it was the opening weekend performance that killed it. It was buried behind Enchanted, This Christmas, Hitman, Beowulf, Bee Movie, and Fred Claus, and August Rush. And Beowulf, Bee Movie, and Fred Claus, had opened earlier in the month.

I said it before and I'll say it again - They were stupid, stupid, stupid too have pulled The Mist before universities let out for Christmas break. It should have stayed in theaters at least another two or three weeks.

Who looks like jughead? And what are you saying there with the same way? Same way as what?

And since I'm asking questions, are you high right now?

I've been wondering that too since he started posting here.

So yeah, on December 5th me and Fred are having a Punisher: Warzone DVD party.

We're gonna watch all three Punisher films back to back and then we're gonna play MARVEL Scene it to top it off.

I'm just trying to figure out in what order to watch these movies.

Chronological?

Best to worst?

Well come to think of it, both options end with Warzone so I think that's the way to go.

Oooh I could bring Marvel Heroscape too...though Frank never made it out as a figure. We could customize.

Wolverine didn't make it either come to think of it.

Fun game though...

Logan, would you like to make a genuine bet on whether or not Warzone will be direct to DVD? Got Paypal?

In my opinion the December 5 release date could be the kiss of death.

Here is who Frank Castle will have to battle with at the Box Office -

1. Quantum of Solace - Nov 7 - Juggernaut

2. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa - Nov 7 - This will do well.

3. Australia - Nov 14 - Jackman and Kidman

4. Bolt - Nov 21 - Travolta and Miley Cyrus (oh god), but it will kill.

5. Transporter 3 - Nov 26 - Statham

6. The Road - Nov 26 - Cormac McCarthy's newest adaptation with Viggo

7. Four Christmases - Nov 26 - Seth Gordon's new one with Vince Vaughn, Resse Witherspoon, and Robert Duvall.

8. The Day the Earth Stood Still - Dec 12 - Keanu

9. Defiance - Dec 12 - More Daniel Craig

10. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Dec 19 - Brad Pitt and David Fincher together again.

11. The Tale of Despereaux - Dec 19 - Universal's big animated holiday movie, could be huge.

Plus there is Bedtime Stories, the new Sandler film, Marley And Me with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston, and The Spirit, all coming on the 25th.

And this list does not account for smaller films that could hit big.

- TB

So basically there's nothing else opening Dec 5th.

That list of 14 movies includes 6 different genres, but nothing else comic-booky. And as anyone who watches the daily infotainment shows will tell you (because that makes them experts) - comic book movies are big business, so if this is a comic book movie it must be AWESOME!

I've read the last 135 pages of this thread with interest but have so far stayed quiet on Warzone. I'm open to anything, and I have enough to keep me busy until Dec 5th without having to speculate and make assumptions based on a few wildly un-credited Harry Knowles-isms. But I'm concerned at the negativism I'm seeing here.

14 weeks from now we'll know what LionsGate decided to go with. And on the afternoon of the 5th we can all whine about how great/crappy/cheesy the movie was. Right now, nobody knows what the final product is going to be. But the main character will have a skull on his chest, and beyond that it's just one in a bajillion revenge movies that everyone has seen before.

Let's face it. The Punisher debuted in 1974. That year also gave us Death Wish, and for the last 34 years every revenge/vengeance movie has been compared to warmed-over Charles Bronson.

It's too bad that Frank Castle is so easily categorized as a one dimensional revenge machine. THAT is what will kill this movie. As soon as Entertainment Tonight describes it as a "seen it before, run-of-the-mill revenge movie" it's over.

Fifty-some thousand people read The Punisher on a monthly basis. To open at $15 million requires more than 30x that number to go see it. So you just know there has to be some compromise. 29/30 people who will see this movie have not bought a Punisher comic in the last 8 years.

For myself, I'm pleased it got another chance to make it into the movie archive, whether or not it's huge, a flop, or straight to DVD. Just the opportunity to see my beloved Punisher on the screen again makes it happy time in my house.

And TB knows how much I looooooves me some Punisher.

Thomas, would you like to make a genuine bet on whether or not Warzone will be direct to DVD?

Its funny you bring up a bet.

Almost a year ago, around the time Stevenson got cast, a friend of mine says to me "I'll bet you $20 the Trailer for this movie is gonna be awesome."

I laughed and said to him [with no knowledge of what the movie was gonna look or amount to] "I'll take that bet, cause I say you're gonna hate the Trailer. Let's just keep it clean, no cash."

*My friend knew ZERO about this production, had never read any of the scripts or reviews, all he knew was that Jane left over "undisclosed reasons".

When the Trailer came out, I'd forgotten all about our little bet.

He calls me out of the blue and tells me "Thomas you were right. This looks terrible. Why'd they even make this?"

When the Comicon footage came out, I send him a link to his Myspace.

He deleted the comment and called me to tell me "This is ridiculous. What was MARVEL thinking???"

That's when I proceeded to explain to him that LGF is responsible for this garbage, not MARVEL.

Warzone is some kind of imploding bomb.

The more of itself it reveals, the more it sinks itself into cinematic shame.

It doesn't deserve to be in theatres.

I did notice one funny thing.....there is this sang, "even bad publicity is better then no publicity"...i never thought much about that really, but i did get a chuckle when i saw a picture of Mr. Logan standing next to the poster for the new punisher movie and even pointing to it....and yeah of course i saw the photoshop words on it....but you have to admit when you see that a person took the time to take that photograph.....others around him must have thought " wow , that movie must be good!!! " :P ......makes you think about the things you do......

Keanu's movie is Prime Rib compared to Warzone.

I mean, besides moron Punisher fans who the fuck is gonna wanna see it???

It just wouldn't make any sense for the studio to drop $10 Million on wide release distribution when it is clearly not gonna appeal to anyone that cherishes their money.

Punisher fans proved to me this year they will take WHATEVER.

If there was a scene in Warzone where Frank Castle eats human brains, they would LOVE it.

Kids man.

*Just cause I'm in the photo, don't mean I'm in the movie.

i just brought that up as a joke really, because you have to think, anyone that was walking by, they didnt see the cheese comment, they saw some guy with a serious face pointing to this movie poster, and they might have thought, this must be a serious fan of this movie.......irony i guess, thats all .....

Aren't you a fan of The Punisher as well?

I'm a fan, but unlike the majority of Punisher fans - I won't eat whatever LGF gives me.

I don't care much for the stuff that came before Ennis.

His work got me to start buying the book, to the point of owning 100 issues after 8 years.

I must say the Warzone fiasco has really displayed The Punisher community at its worst.

Completely biased, no sense of taste in film, above all a total lack of character in their no holds barred support for Warzone.

The thing with me is I follow film as a career.

I'm an actor and a screenwriter.

I respect the comic book medium, but it is in the end a medium inferior to cinema.

If Punisher fans had ANY tact, they would deem Warzone the shit that it truly is and not continue to be such pawns to this catastrophe of a movie LGF doesn't know what to do with.

As long as they got gore, most fans won't care.

If the '04 movie had blood and gore flowing like the elevator scene from The Shining, they would probably be more fine with it. They would still bitch about Florida though.

The sole mission of this movie was supposed be topping the '04 movie.

How hard can it be to top a $15 Million movie???

If they knew the script was shit (which they did) they shoulda just said "Fuck it. We can't do it." and saved their "$34 Million" [according to Steve Gainer].

They coulda made a REAL movie.

At least one that doesn't look cheaper than Roger Corman's Fantastic Four.

I'll deem it shit if I see it and it is shit. I'm not going to be like you and make quick judgments based on hearsay.

I'm guess you're not accepting my gentleman's wager?

So wanting a quality film and not some piece of shit makes me biased?

I enjoy GOOD films.

I don't care if The Punisher is written into a porno.

If the film is shit then he is shit in that film.

You people need to start being a little more open minded.
