Hollywood Remakes Of Classic Or Cult Films

Recommended Posts

The Evil Dead remake had been in the works for some time. I just hope they don't get it off the ground. The film is classic. Originally, they had Seann Scott Williams cast for Ash. How horrible would that have been? I can't stand that guy, not even if The Rock is slapping him around.

They're remaking Evil Dead and Nightmare On Elm Street.

Nothing is sacred now.

The world is being sucked into a black hole.

Here is an article with a list of TONS of horror films being remade. A lot of these make me sad.

The director tells us there is still zero movement on the proposed Evil Dead remake that was first announced when Ghost House Pictures was formed. As he told me during our last meeting, he's just too busy focusing on other projects to mull over Ash's return to the screen. "We still want to do it," he says. "We still think it's worth trying and I've still not done a single thing about it."

This was from an interview with Raimi. As far as I'm concerned, no movement on this project is a good thing. Evil Dead is perfect as it is, leave it. Besides, with Blue Ray winning the format war, we'll be bracing ourselves for the new editions of Evil Dead popping up every 6 months. ;)

Actually no, the farthest the remake ever got was just saying it was being made, like Weber said. Campbell even said that there wouldn't be an Ash in the remake, it was the only way he'd give his blessing for the remake.

The Death Race trailer is up. Surprisingly, it doesn't look half bad. I don't care for the director (Paul W.S. Anderson, he always gets his hands on good projects, but comes up short in the end). Nothing against him, it's just that he had not won me over yet. But this, this one might be good.

I'm not big on remakes, and I love the original Death Race 2000, but I think I'll check this one out. I can't see that it's going to have the same cultural impact that the original did (who could have imagined that the message in the '75 original would ring so true today). If you have not seen it, pick it up, it's great exploitation fun. David Carradine is great, and you get to see Stallone in one of his first roles.

I'm actually looking forward to the Highlander remake and I hope it will be a really good reboot like Batman Begins or Casino Royale, that lives up to the great potential of this concept, like the first film did. After the The Source crap it's time to start over :P

Actually I'm kinda looking forward to the Friday the 13th remake. 10 movies on (well 11 including Freddy vs. Jason), a remake isn't the worst thing to happen to this series.

See, I'm a Creature geek, and any alteration they make to that make up design just won't be The Creature. I just have shuddering flashbacks to a movie called OctoMan that was a grade Z Creature ripoff from the 80's.

Anyone ever see the Bill Stout "Godzilla" storyboards from the 90's? Now THAT'S the Godzilla remake I wanna see!

Here is a case of "maybe it's about time?"

Maybe I feel that way because in spite of the cool as shit original "CREATURE" make-up, I never really considered the actual film to be that incredible.

Maybe it's because Creature From the Black Lagoon is not in my pantheon of all-time favorites (for whatever reasons).

I remember back in the late 80's John Carpenter was going to do this. Not sure what ever happened with it.

With the right creative team in place I could see this being pretty cool.

Odd how no one has gotten close to it until now. The rest of the Universal Monsters have been done, well, I guess there is The Invisible Man and The Wolfman too.

How about Creature From The Black Lagoon directed by David Cronenberg?

Or Guillermo Del Toro . . .

Bottom line, I PRAY there is a good script if it's going to happen.

I have a few. I'll try and dig them out.

I would LOVE to see Bill Stouts Godzilla storyboards from the 90's. Are they on the web somewhere?

Has anyone else heard about Billy Bob Thornton signing up to play Freddy in the Nighmare remake? That might just work, but it's near impossible to see anyone else besides Robert Englund as Freddy.

Here are a few of the Stout GODZILLA storyboards. They're in a book called "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Screen" by Marc Shapiro. There are more in there but they're not as finished as these. The plotline as described in the book, oddly enough, is VERY close to CLOVERFIELD.

Cloverfield was a good addition to the "Giant Monster" genre, but there really needs to be some more.

Have you seen The Host (Korean film)? It's pretty awesome!

I hate the fact that Robert Englund will not be playing Freddy in the remake, though he will make an appearance in the film- no concrete news yet who WILL play Freddy, but this small blurb might shed some light on the whole Billy Bob thing.

I know! It's a redesign that respects and invokes memories of the original. And it doesn't look like Jay Leno!

Thanks for posting them Joe...fantastic stuff.....now THAT'S godzilla!

Still have to see The Host. I've got it on my "to buy" list, so it's just a matter of time. I've seen a few trailers, it looks pretty good.

You could have really nice monster movie triple feature with The Host, Cloverfield and The Mist. In that order too, the movies get progressively bleak.

Also, somehow they are doing a prequel to The Host, I have no idea how that's going to work.

I had no idea they were remaking one of my favorite films until this thread. Escape from New York was a gritty masterpiece and made me want to don an eye patch in the 80s. And that soundtrack is unforgettable. I destroyed my VHS copy of that flick from overuse when it came out, lost my DVD copy in 2003 somewhere in Iraq, and now I'm just waiting for the Bluray. Escape from LA does not exist in my world. As much as I hate the idea of them remaking it, I will also be the first in line on opening night.

Michael De Luca has partnered with Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta to develop a bigscreen remake of the 1987 Mickey Rourke supernatural thriller "Angel Heart."

Producers optioned remake rights from a private U.K. firm, which owns the rights to the original film, which was produced by Carolco and distributed by TriStar. De Luca, Rosenzweig and Gaeta also optioned the underlying book rights to William Hjortsberg's novel "Falling Angel," from which original film was adapted.

Original film, which caused a stir for its steamy sex scenes, was written and directed by Alan Parker and also starred Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet.

Novel follows the exploits of Harry Angel, a New York detective hired by a mysterious client to track down a once-popular performer indebted to him. While pursuing this seemingly routine investigation, Harry encounters dark and supernatural forces.

In the meantime, as we wait for another needless remake, go out and rent or buy the original Angel Heart with the very charismatic Mickey Rourke of old.

Johnny Handsome is Johnny Favorite is Jonathan Liebling, or as Harry Angel refers to himself (unknowingly) .. Johnny Golden-tonsils.

6 degrees of Johnny. Angel Heart is a modern classic.

This makes about as much sense as remaking Bad Lieutenant.

Wherever Bradstreet is right now I know he's going to have kittens when he hears this one. He turned me onto this movie years ago.

All I can say is . . . AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How could you expect to top Alan Parker and Mickey Rourke?

Lemme guess, they're targeting the Transporter and Crank crowd.

Jason Statham IS Harry Angel!

Oh . . . God.

And who will play Louis Cyphre? Ooh! I know, The Rock!

Can't fail.

Please forgive my initial disgust.
