Should Forum's messages be viewable to public?

Recommended Posts

Hi again everyone! :)

I had thought (*gasp*) - Should this Forum be open to the viewing public or closed (as it is now where you have to register and sign in to see the messages)?

I ask this because if the Forum was an open format, that might attract more people to the site, because then they'll see right away that the Forum is active and what's being talked about...

Just a thought. I don't even know if it is a good suggestion. I just know that if I were a casual fan of Tom's or whatever, when I get to this Forum and it says I have to register and log in, it kinda would put me off from continuing...maybe...because you can't see any of the messages....

What do you think?

Jen,

When I found this site I was excited but then I got shot down to see the forum because I had to register. That didn't stop me one bit. I kinda like it that way anyway. Although it doesn't keep all the "bots" out, I'm sure it helps a little bit to keep the creeps outta here. Right? I mean, if someone is truly interested in what's going on in here, registering to see the forum shouldn't stop them...I mean, it's not like they have to pay for the site or anything...

Yeah, when I signed up early on, we had a few creeps. All seems cool now though. But I'm open to it, why not?

If that's the case, then why are some users designated as guests? I assumed those were folks who were just taking a look, but you have to register if you want to comment. Is that not correct?

Hmmm, good point about the "Guest" function k-skye. I don't know what that means...?

I mean, based on how I log in, you have to be registered and then type in your name and password, unless you log in as "invisible" - maybe that's what a "guest" is??

I just pop straight in from my bookmark. I only have to log in when I'm on a different computer. I have no clue about the guest function either.

I thought when you log in as invisible you'd be counted as an "anonymous user."

I still don't understand how people log in as "guests."

Maybe open the board up so that people see what its like but if they want to leave comments they have to register and sign up. At least that way they can look before they leap.

Yeah, I don't know that this setup was meant to be permanent. It wasn't done for no reason. It was necessary.

I'm not sure it still is though. Let me check in with the boys and see how our founding fathers feel about it. Tim and I chatted about this like 6 or 8 months ago but I can't remember for the life of me that we made any decisions.

:)

More soon!

Heya!

I see that the Forum is now open to general public viewing. It will be interesting to see if we get more new members signing up since it's been 'open' in this way. :)

Yeah, it's open to the public now. We're still having to validate new members because we're still dealing with about 50 or 60 spambots a day trying to get on the boards. You can see some of the member ID's pop up on the main page while they wait validation. They usually look something like this:

kmmmoooozii45Q34nnjim

Or my recent favorite

farm_animal_ad_coupons

Please let farm_animal_ad_coupons get validated.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

P.S. I keep picturing JWeb and Noe engaged in this virtual "whack-a-mole" game - swatting at spam-bots as they circle the forum. Lordy, what a task! Keep up the good work, guys!
