Interesting story over on Aint it Cool News

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/34556

Whoever they cast for Max better be as iconic as Mel, but even still, imagine recasting Dirty Harry for The Dead Pool, because Eastwood said no. Who's gonna do it?

I say call it "Fury Road" and follow a different character all together in the same world. Max ain't the only bad ass in the badlands.

I guess Butler is packed with projects up to... I don't know- 2011? So he's probably out.

Man, I'd rather they left it alone. I don't know what's with some of these pointless sequels. I mean, sure if Mel did it, different story but no Mel? What the hell?

And now Butler is remaking Escape From New York which I'm a lil' pissed about. I mean why ruin a classic? Not to mention Kurt Russell and John Carpenter are pissed about it.

But, if they had to do it for Mad Max, they should get Matthew McConaughey, remember him in Reign Of Fire. Total badass. He's made some shitty movies since then but if he came back like that, full force, and hard, fierce and in your face. That would be cool.

Carpenter is pissed? Huh, I always thought he'd even sell his own kid, if he got a couple of dollars for it.

Yeesh, I can't see McConaughey as Max. Not at all. I'd rather see Mel do it again too. Recasting the role just seems very wrong. This character is iconic, as is the style of film. He defined a "type" of action film, like Die Hard did.

Mel very nearly did the film before 9/11. The production was ramping up when 9/11 happened, Mel on board. I was surprised he wasn't doing it this time, but the report may be wrong, you just ever know. But if he doesn't do it, they should just let the character go, and find themselves someone new to follow around the highways.

KaChunk, KaChunk, KaChunk.

Maybe he should make a movie about Emil Minty's character all grown up in the wasteland.

It still would be like Terminator Salvation and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It just doesn't feel right without the anti-heroes.

I hated Kurt Russell in Deathproof, but I'd be first in line to watch him play Snake again. Same if Mel was doing Max again.

The idea of these guys gettin old is a good thing for the roles. Its the reason I love Tom Horn and The Hunter so much.

Watchin McQueen aged, is just bad-ass.

No, I wasn't say McConaughey be Max. You said you'd like to see another person in the same world as Max so I suggested him, I don't want anyone to be Max but Mel.

Sorry, totally misunderstood ya about McConaughey there. Maybe it's his southern vibe, even in Reign of Fire it was there, I just can't see him fitting into that world as the lead. But maybe. He could make a good villian maybe. I think I'll watch Reign of Fire again this weekend and ponder.

I didn't like Death Proof at all. Kurt was good in it, but I would much rather have seen him in a solid film. I'm way over QT's work anyhow. The guy was great when he had something to prove, now he's just so deeply in love with himself he's making his own vanity/fetish films, and folks are letting him.

Emil Minty's "ferel kid" character would be cool to see again. He's completely fallen off the radar though.

Yeah, he can't get rid of that damn accent. It works well in Reign Of Fire though.

Man, I forgot all about Emil. He is definitely gone. What the hell happened to him?

I like Matty for the role...I think Tom would be perfect for it as well.

What about Russell Crowe? What about Christian Bale? Either one could do the role no problems.

As far as Escape goes...all I have to say to Kurt and John is ESCAPE FROM LA!!! You had your chance and you blew it. Gerard Butler is a BMF and Escape could use a remake...

I know...I'm the Anti-Christ for supporting these remakes...oh well.

Noeland, I am in 100% agreement with your statement on Quentin. That guy is blowing himself these days. Kurt Russell needed a job and took Deathproof, which is actually a hand-me-down - Mickey Rourke said "there's no way I'm letting some chicks fuck me up." Quentin had great films until he started tag-teaming with Robert Rodriguez again - which I respect for Sin City and Planet Terror (as a C movie) bu that's it. I've posted before about how much I fuckin hated the female dialogue in Deathproof. It makes ZERO sense, no women talk like that!!! Maybe Quentin has never had a conversation with a woman. Fuck do I know? Now, talkin SNAKE. NO BRIT OR AUSTRALIAN should be allowed 50 miles from the set. I got nothin against British and Aussie actors, big fan of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, but some roles are for us American boys. Yet another reason why Ray Stevenson shouldn't be playin Frank Castle. It's got nothin to do with them being able to hide their accents, we have certain traditions in this country. The Western is ours. The Snake films are ours. The Punisher is ours. Plain and simple. This country STILL has great American actors, we DON'T have to give out every good role to the people that don't even live here. I didn't like 3:10 TO YUMA, because what the fuck was they thinkin??? Two blokes? Whatever. I'm surprised you CPT Doss, are cool about the Aussies and Brits takin all the roles. Kurt Russell is as American as you can get. He shouldn't be replaced, and if the dicksmokers replace him anyway - they best go American.

Hate to break it to you man, but my Mother talks like that. The whole thing that Tracie Thoms says at the diner about having a gun, my Mother has said it time and time again. But anyway, that's beside the point. I liked the movie, you didn't. Big fuckin' deal, right?

But, as far as 3:10 to Yuma goes, I fuckin' hate Russell Crowe, Christian Bale is a God especially when surrounded by the likes of Crowe. That guy treats people like shit and Bale told him to his face, even got into a fist fight over how Crowe was treating the crew, the cast and even the damn director. He's doing a job that many dream of doing and he's fuckin' rubbin' it in their faces by pullin' his lil' sissy fits. He needs to grow the fuck up. Anyway, I'm not pickin' a fight with you TL, I enjoy talkin' with you and agree about alot of stuff you say, so don't take it the wrong way, alright man. ;)

As far as Max goes, they can fuck off. I don't want another one. No Mel, No Max. 'Nuff-fuckin'-said. Right boys?

Ok, speaking of not picking a fight.... BUT HOW THE HELL does Russell Crowe treat people any worse than Mel Gibson does? They are both major jerks! But they are both damn good actors. And I respect them for the craft not the person.

I'd love to see somebody else play MAD MAX....hey!...how about RAY STEVENSON!!!!!! lol

I don't know where you heard about Bale and Crowe having a hard time working together, I've heard the opposite in spades. And James Mangold has said he can't wait to work with Crowe again.

A quote from an online (atpictures.com) Bale interview:

Actor Christian Bale was bracing himself for an uncomfortable time on the set of new movie 3:10 TO YUMA - because he'd been warned his Australian co-star Russell Crowe was difficult to work with.

But the 33-year-old was left surprised when Crowe turned out to be not just friendly, but the "easiest damn guy I've ever worked with".

He says, "Everyone said, 'Man, you're going to have a tough time.' And I thought, 'Bring it on! Come on, buddy, give me the best you got!'

"I tell ya, he was the easiest damn guy I've ever worked with. He was so simple. We got along so well, and he just appreciates people who know what they're doing - that's it. He's a good guy."

Russell Crowe mocked new co-star Christian Bale so mercilessly about his role as BATMAN, the Welsh star treated him to his very own superhero suit.

The pair appear together in new movie 3:10 To Yuma - and Bale reveals he quickly grew tired of Crowe's constant ridicule.

Bale says, "It never stopped and it continues still.

"I actually had to buy him his own special rubber suit."

Bale recently revealed Crowe will be making a cameo appearance in the next Batman film, The Dark Knight.

He said, "Russell's going to actually be in the new Batman movie, which is a big surprise and I want to reveal it to everybody right now."

A little on Crowe and his director:

Actor Russell Crowe was left exasperated on the set of new western 3:10 TO YUMA when director JAMES MANGOLD tried to direct a herd of cattle, only for the cows to stampede in the wrong direction.

Crowe, who owns a cattle farm in Australia, watched as Mangold ignored his advice and the animals headed off into the wilderness not to return for two hours.

He says, "Working with the horses and the cattle weren't his (Mangold's) favourite moments. He had a cracker of a time at one point where Jim thought he was going to be able to stampede cattle and they would take a left turn just because that's how he marked the path.

"I was trying to catch him. I said, 'Jimmy, mate it don't work that way. You stampede those cattle they're gonna go up that hill, and we're gonna be hanging around here for two hours getting the cattle down from the hill.'

"He goes, 'No, but the path's marked clearly.' 'It's a f**king cow! It's not gonna go around the corner like that. He said, 'OK let's see what happens.'

"We did see what happened. Bang bang they stampeded and up the bloody mountain they went, and two hours later we're still twiddling our thumbs waiting for the cattle to come down from the top of the mountain."

Crowe can be an asshole, but so can I. So can anybody if the situation presents itself and you're getting pushed. And while I've never thrown a phone at anybody, I never had a real reason to, ya know? The guy isn't that bad, I mean how can anyone who opened a school for poor kids be that bad?

All that said, I think any "marquee" actor other than Mel Gibson trying to play Mad Max is full and wholly cracked in the head. I like Crowe and Bale as actors, but I can't see em playing Max, or even playing in that sand box as other characters.

There is a way to recast the role smartly, but it involves re-writing the new film smartly, and not just plopping a new actor into Mel's shoes, and having him read the script written for Mel. They have to re-invent the whole thing, and tailor the role for whoever takes his place, but, how impossible does it sound: "We have to replace Mel Gibson in the role of Mad max." Nigh on impossible.

Before Mad Max and Road Warrior nobody knew Mel Gibson. So, an unknown actor might have the chance to step in and really blow everyone away. Do I think that's gonna happen? NO. But I've been wrong before. I expected to HATE Casino Royale, now it's my favorite Bond film.

Lets just hope the new film never takes off. :) But my feeling is that JLA is going to be a hit, and then Miller will move right into Fury Road.

Alright Irish, tell me why you HATE Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger? And what didn't ya like about Goldeneye - which was directed by the guy behind Casino Royale?

Almost forgot, Noeland I think JLA has a 60% chance of blowing balls. DC is getting too ahead of themselves. Marvel is doing things right with the Avengers: Iron Man premieres in May, Capi's movie is out June of '09, and Thor hits theatres April 2010. Ant-Man might get made into a film by 2010 also. DC is re-starting the Superman franchise (thank God) and Bale refuses to do a JLA film. Now they're saying that a Flash spin-off will come out of JLA. What the FUCK is this shit??? Fantastic Four JLA??? Give me your thoughts on this subject that Street and Tom Racine brushed over in the podcast.

well, maybe I was a bit off, I said I hate "Bond movies" (actually it was HATE,HATE,HATE, Bond movies.) What I should have said was, I, HATE, HATE, HATE, James Bond, period. Books, character, movies, music, any of it. Never been a fan of any of the super spy stuff, James Bond is the KING of the HILL when it comes to super spy stuff...but if they bring back the same Bond we had this time, I'd go see another one. Because Casino Royale is only the second James Bond film I have ever seen. I hate James Bond so why go see any of those films you mentioned? God forbid Tom Jane stars in one...fuck...that would be a dilema...

Dude whether or not you hate hate hate the spy genre, check out those Bond films I mentioned (they're the first 3), Its Sean Connery at his best. and I mentioned this earlier - Robert Shaw's (Jaws, Force 10 from Navarone) best role, is as an assassin in From Russia with Love (1963). I'm sure Goldeneye was the other Bond film you saw.
