Movies & Reviewing

Recommended Posts

Now I don't even claim to be informed or knowledgible about things such as lighting, costume period pieces, good angles. Heck, I can barely tell you if I think the casting was good or if an actor/actress's talents were wasted on a butchered end result.

I do know that I like some movies better than others, and I cannot give a quanitified answer as to why.

For some of the more recent movies I have seen, I usually always try and accept the film w/o any extrenal influences.

Examples. I was a heavy comic buff for decades so I knew the bacground stories and many of the story lines in the movies such as the Spiderman series, Hulk, Punisher, Iron Man, FF4, etc etc....

I also have favorite actors and lesser favorite actors (As I cannot off the top of my head pick out a actor I feel sucks huge...). Since I was/am a fan of anime, martial arts films, mechanical constructs, vehicles etc.... I found that movies are getting harder for me not to nit pick at. Now maybe that is due to age (I recall watching the Movie Megaforce at least a dozen times and Ghostbusters played in my home town for 33 weeks...) or maybe I'm just less apt to be drawn into a movie that has technical flaws.

Some examples of more recent movies...

Wolverine: I really liked Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, despite the simple acting required and the horrible CG in some instances. I also was disappointed by the end badguy concept, let alone fight CG.

Iron Man: I really wasn't a fan of Downey Jr. and was leary at his casting as Stark. I thought he was excellent as Stark. Good movie but felt that Terrence Howard was a poor choice for James Rhodes (mainly the Voice didn;t fit my concept of the comic character).

Indy 4: Personally I thought there was WAY too much CG used in a traditionally physical prop film. Just some way too amazing skill scenes and the X-Files ending turned me off. Oh and the lead fridge vs. Nuke was just lame... IMHO... Otherwise I did enjoy the movie.

Wall-E: Despite being a kids movie, I really like this one. I cannot even tell you why I like it. Maybe I just like the whole Wall-E EVA situation... Or the Captain... I dunno.... I liked it so much I bought the Blue Ray version too.

The Dark Knight: Good movie, I absolutely HATED the Batcycle... With a passion.... Would it have been as good had Legder not passed on? I don't think it would have. But that is my opinion.

Casino Royale: Which I really like the gritty version of James Bond, this one was a Meh.... OK film.

Terminator 4: Too much plotline revealed in trailers. If they had NEVER shown Marcus in the trailers I woulda been much happier. Good action flick. Check your brain at the door....

Hellboy 2: I'm getting to like Ron Perlman for just because of the shear volume of time he puts up with in makeup.... I liked him from movies way back like The Name of the Rose (Yes I disliked Christan Slater even back then however...) Another entertaining movie to me. Yet once again, brain? Stay home....

I've seen and read many of those reviews/critiques on the board by those who live and breathe the industry of movie going, and I'll sum up most of my level of understanding the film technical aspects of the lighting, scenery, etc.... Zero/Zip/Nada... I'm just a dumb engineer who can build giant mechanical contraptions with steel and bolt and the calculations to do it right the first time (hopefully....), As for a movie? I'd probably find the design schematics of the film cameras and the animatronics/props/etc, far more easier to critique than film quality & substance.

Meh....

All that being said. I love watching movies and movie trailers that give me a reason to want to know more about the movie.

I just watched a new trailer for District 9, and I actually want to watch the movie to learn more about it. The fast, blurred action scene remind me of Transformers, but it is new and not a commonly recurring theme... (Which is why I am actually becoming more of a fan of Mr. Jane with every new project he seems to work on.).

Wow... I just noticed... It is more like a rant.... Sigh... time for bed....

Y'know this seems like a good place to discuss films or thoughts that may not have or deserve a dedicated thread of it's own.

Or just discussion in general, y'know, general discussion about films, reviews, assholes who make films, assholes who watch films and rip them down unfairly, idiots who like everything they see as long as it doesn't have a brain, Y'KNOW, general discussion ;)

To wit -

I just saw a poster and read the plot of a film called Brothers

Now for some reason I want to take a giant shit on it but that is totally unfair ;)

It's got an amazing director, Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, The Field, In The Name Of The Father, The Boxer) and what looks to be a fairly amazing cast, Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Toby Maguire, Mare Winningham, and Sam Shepard.

Yet I read the synopsis and it sounds amazingly like the the worst parts (which equals nearly all) of Michael Bay's 2001 wannabe epic Pearl Harbor, except for the fact that in this film the male leads in question are brothers, not best friends. Wow, never seen that before. The guy has a beautiful girlfriend/wife, the guy goes to war, the guy is assumed killed, the grieving wife seeks solace in the arms of the guy's friend/brother, the guy ain't dead and he comes back to see his beautiful wife in his friend's/brother's arms. Betrayal, insanity, tears, and mayhem ensue. Somehow I refuse to give a shit.

And I feel like a slug saying that because I love Jim Sheridan's films.

I know there is more to the story, sure, there's gotta be. But everything I see tells me that I'm waiting for cable to catch it.

And neither Jim, Natalie, Jake, or Toby is enough to make me pay $9.50 to see a scenario, a dynamic that doesn't interest me that much in the first place.

Why am I even mentioning this? Why not, it's just what is going through my mind currently.

I'm likely being unfair toward the film right now but I'll give it's true day in court someday, just not theatrically.

Apparently I'm portraying an alternate general discussion dynamic, "asshole who doesn't even bother to watch a film before he rips it down unfairly ;)

Oh I have no problem with that. Many a time I will not see a movie until years later when I get around to renting it. And while I loved the movie Jarhead with Jake in it, I would agree that just from reading the synopsys and not seeing any trailers, I'd wholly pass on that movie as well. I would think it would be the same as stating you want to see a movie HUGE because of the trailers and synopsys, but come the time you see it, it appeals to you like two week old coffee...

Now I'm a die hard fan of action, and Sci-fi films. I even like horribly bad midieval films and the old chop-socky, dubbed, kung fu flicks. The worse the dubbing, the more I laugh at it.

To give you that example, I JUST finished watching a horribly sad movie I ordered from Amazon.

Robot Jox. A horrible CHEESE fest of a film that puts Barry Bostwick in Megaforce to utter shame for cheese factor... I bought it because of ONE technical accuracy that is missed from almost EVERY sci-fi. In Space, there is NO sound. Horrible cheese factor with some awesome technical knowledge that is lacking in Star Trek and every other newer "high budget" movie.

Resident Evil movie fans (are there any?) and Haters (there are plenty!) Resident Evil 4 attack of the Alice Clones in 3D...or some such title, is set for release in September. My daughter is an absolute HATER of these films. I am hot and cold. But we both agree there should not be anymore of them and absolutly NOT IN 3D!

Here is a laugh out loud mock trailer she found and posted on her web page on deviant art.

i hate them all. and i'm proud to say i'm a gamer!

but why anymore? now its just getting stupid, alice keeeps fighting her clones Over AND OVER AGAIN.

"We're Comming to get you"

"ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF USSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS"

yup thats how exstinksion ended and that was 3.

and now its the same thing over and over again.

Lets face it Yall stupid Anderson Wrote himself in a hole and i mean a BIG HOLE.

it's called the "Hole Of No Return" since he had to go and RE-WRITE THE WHOLE THING (instead of takeing what was already written in the games) AND RE-INVENT THE WHOLE THING

he is now TRAPPED.

he can't escape, and thats why this film is gonna bomb.

not to mention CAPCOM was on a sequel contract with them (it was also a bad contract too, seeing as anderson and miss perfect treat them like utter shit. they don't let them advertise their games and anderson can advertise his dumb films.)

but capcom's agreement with those idiots is about to EXPIRE.

and thats why i belive we are getting another film movie 4 its because anderson wants to take what he can and make what he can (meaning money) BEFORE THE CONTRACT EXPIRES.

but like i've said its a bad video-game to film Wesker isn't Wesker in the Movies HE'S BILLY BOB.

resident evil isn't just about Zombies Actually the Games are more ABOUT WESKER AND HOW HE'S GONNA KILL MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WITH NEW VIRUSES! not to mention he always want to kill chris and his stupid friends.

the video games are centered on a VILLIAN!

and stupid hollywood just can't except that.

i would know i'm heading into this movie field cus i'm MAD at them.

now is the first film a good zombie film? yes if you like zombies.

but is it a good film if you like Resident Evil the games?

NO.

i do apologize but it's like my old man said I'm A DIE HARD HATER OF THESE FILMS!

so sorry :( i don't mean to be a troll or a meanie its fine to state your opinion its okay. ;)

i just figured to explain why i don't like them.

again i don't want to be a meanie. :(

I have to agree. These movies suck. I don't understand why they are even called Resident Evil. Just to make a few dollars, I guess. Without the name, they would not even get a enough money to warrant a sequel. The games aren't anything special, story wise, but they were entertaining.

I will say this, and I will get flamed. I think Mila Jovovich sucks. I think she is a bad actress, and I don't think she is very hot. I'm sorry, but I had to get that off my chest. Everytime I see her, I wonder why she is in movies.

Well its about time somebodey ELSE I KNOW HAS SAID THAT ABOUT HER.

i do love the games. but its like Come on now if your going to call it Resident Evil then at least make it have to do with the game "Some what"

but that isn't what they did at all. they just went in there and re-wrote everything! and now anderson is trapped in "The Hole Of No Return"

they are crap. all my friends on deviantart who are die hard fans of the games hate them.

and i can see why.

they just arn't resident evil.

and yes Milia DOES SUCK big time. in my opinion their are way more talented actesses in holloywood than her.

Haha. Love the parody.

Never tried the Resident Evil games and therefore doesn't know the story. Don't really know why I never tried the games, since I'm also a gamer (PC).

I saw the first RE movie in the cinema on my 18th birthday, so I have fond memories of it and loved it. I liked the whole sci-fi aspect of it all. Also a big fan of Milla (cuz of The Fifth Element and Joan of Arc) at the time.

The second sucked donkey balls... I got kind of pissed seeing it. It's not worse than a Steven Seagal movie, but it comes close. Though I only saw it once way back.

RE3 was much better imo. Though it had some lame scenes I didn't like, but it was way more good than bad in it.

This 4th flick... god, I have such low expectations. Mainly because of the trailer. I feel sorry for the RE games fans. It's a franchise that's sold about 40mill games. Why not do the fans justice..?

Same goes with the miscasted mess that is Max Payne. Jason Patric or even Tom Jane would rather have fit the bill as Payne. And I'd rather have seen Famke Janssen as Mona Sax. Though I don't think they'd save the movie either. The flick Narc is much more how a Max Payne movie should look and feel like.

Thanx man i agree with you on the fact that the RE games have sold alot, so why not do the fans some justice?

what i don't think they understand is if they did it right it could make way more MONEY.

video games to film are failures with me for the most part. Now Aderson is talking about makeing as SH2 :o

SILENT HILL2 ! its gonna suck!

*cowers in fear*

you can read the article here on SH2 >.< http://www.reelzchannel.com/movie-news/655...d-silent-hill-2

you make a ton of good points about MAX PAYNE that was a horrible film >.> an i've never played the video game but i've known people who have and they well HATED IT.

No worries, you're fine!

Actually, I'm quite grateful for your insight, knowledge, and expertise.

I'm not a gamer, so I didn't know the first one deviated from the game so much.

In general, I just love the concept of rogue science and corporate greed going wrong and biting them in the a$$ with the result.

Many years ago, little Milla was one of my kids at a summer (church!) camp.

I have to say, acting aside, she seems to have grown up quite nicely from that serious, precocious - and intimidating! - 12-year old! :)

okay thanx. i'm currently playing the remake of the first RE game (it was released on the game cube, but i'm playing it on my wii.)

its got alot of impressive stuff in it. and wesker was actually the leader of the good guys in alpha team but then later betrayed chris and jill to turn into a mutant.

although wesker already was given a virus while he was a child before the manson incident, the virus is called the Progenitor virus.

then during the manson incident he ingected himself with the T-virus.

and then he says "i cast off my frail humanity and became something greater."

but during the events of RE5 it was said that he was a part of the wesker children project. A project started by Umbrella corp. Umbrella abducted thosands of children that were born from families of superior intellect.

then they were all trained and watched over by umbrella, and then given the Progenitor Virus of them only one survived:

that one was Albert Wesker.

and since after the events of RE1 wesker has been killing all of the left over employees of umbrella, and wesker later joined other Bio Weapon organizations to put umbrella into finacial debt.

in RE5 he tracked down and killed Oswell E. Spensor the Founder of Umbrella Co.

i'm gonna post up some videos

(my cousin made me this for my screen saver now i have it)

(scean from RE5)

(another Scean from RE5)

And Here's The One About the Wesker Children Project (RE5)

I watched What About Bob? the other day. This is one of those movies I can watch over and over. To me, it's one of the funniest movies ever. I've already seen it so many times, but I never get tired of it. Bill Murray is brilliant as Bob Wiley. And Richard Dreyfuss is very hilarious as Dr. Leo Marvin. I love these guys. Both of them have their moments.

It's so hard to pick a favorite scene, because the whole movie plays out well from beginning to end.

One of my favorite moments is when Leo tries to wake Bob up. Leo shouts at him and shakes him, but Bob remains sleeping. This goes on for awhile until the alarm sounds off. Then, Bob wakes up.

There are two types of people in this world. Those who like What About Bob?, and those who don't. I love it.

I can't help it. What About Bob? makes me feel good, great, and wonderful.

If you haven't seen it, I strongly urge you to watch this movie. If you have seen this film, feel free to comment on it.

Saw The Other Guys. Hilarious movie! Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg make a great comedy team. :D

This movie has it all--funny lines, cool action sequences, and an interesting plot.

There are so many moments I enjoyed. I love when we see Ferrell and Wahlberg acting crazy in a bar. Also, when we find out the kind of person that Ferrell's character use to be. If you haven't seen it and plan to, I don't want to ruin it for you. There's this great scene that has bullets and papers flying, and it looks so awesome. I also love when the police have a "whispering fight."

I even like Steve Coogan's character, and I'm not really a big fan of his.

The only person I didn't like in the movie is Ray Stevenson. (Surprised?) He didn't feel like he belonged with everyone else. But he did say one line that made me laugh. That's it.

Besides Ferrell and Wahlberg, my favorite character is Michael Keaton's. It has been so long since I have seen Keaton in anything. His character has two jobs, but again I don't want to ruin it for anyone. :P

I don't know if anyone is a fan of Rob Huebel, but he says a very funny line.

I recommend The Other Guys for anyone who loves Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, and buddy cop movies. It's fun, but I won't say it's for the whole family.

Saw Red. It's a great, fun film. Lots of action. Lots of bullets. It's funny. John Malkovich is great, but felt under used. Which I guess is only natural when it's an ensemble cast.

I went in thinking my favorite character would be either Malkovich or Richard Dreyfuss, since they were the main reasons I wanted to see it. But ended up having the sexy Karl Urban being my favorite. Then, Malkovich. And then, surprisingly, Brian Cox.

I really enjoyed a fight scene between Bruce Willis and Urban. Wanted it to last longer than it did, though.

If your like your action to come with a side of comedy, then Red is for you.

Trust me, you'll love the pig. ;)

After months and months of waiting, I finally got to buy The Way at Wal-Mart for $13.96 (a real bargain) & watch it. Now, even though I didn’t get to experience it on the big screen, I still consider the movie itself an enjoyable experience.

The movie begins early on with Tom (Martin Sheen), an eye doctor, receiving the most tragic news imaginable--his son Daniel was killed in an accident. Since Emilio plays Daniel, I can only imagine how emotional filming those moments of remembering Daniel must’ve been like for Martin (perhaps, this gets brought up during the commentary track I’ve yet to have listened to).

Daniel was walking along the pilgrimage “The Way of St. James,” also known as “El Camino de Santiago,” when he got caught up in bad weather and was killed. All that remains of him is his body and his pack of materials. Knowing how important this journey meant to Daniel, Tom decides he’s going to walk “The Way” in honor of his son.

Tom has Daniel cremated, so he can carry his ashes with him. It’s like they’re taking the trip together. Along "The Way," Tom befriends complete strangers who form a strong bond as they grow closer together. There’s laughter and tears, as well as, moments that had me on the edge of my seat. The landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful.

Besides Sheen’s Tom, my favorite character is Jack played perfectly by James Nesbitt. He’s charming the second he pops onto the screen; he’s just so great.

The ending will tug at your heart strings. Just thinking about it makes me smile. The entire film is powerful. It’s definitely worth the time and money.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND The Way; it touched my heart & may move you, as well. I encourage everyone to see it. Has anyone seen it?

“You don’t choose a life, you live one.”

Buen Camino! :D

I saw this in the theater with my friend Ricardo. We both really enjoyed it and were moved by it. I think Ricardo's comment as we exited the theater was, "That was all heart."

While I had some problems with the screenplay and some of the pacing, it's a really powerfully emotional film that I highly recommend.
