Alien remake/reboot

Recommended Posts

Predator I can deal with, but Alien, fuck that. This is the film that made me want to make films at the age of 8. The first one scared the shit out of me, but yet I could not look away. Alien is such a beautiful film, they just don't make 'em like they used to.

Got to keep in mind that it's FOX. When AVP was announced, James Cameron and Ridley Scott told studio heads they would do a 5th Alien together if the nixed AVP. FOX sure made the right choice there <_>

Did anyone else notice Ridley Scott is producing this thing...

Along with Tony. Still, I don't like the idea of just rehashing the first one, casting a new Ripley ect. ect. Toss out Ripley, go a new direction. With the alien, there are so many unexplored possibilites, but like a typical studio, lets just box up what worked in the past a re-do it. Come on.

More garbage from FOX, how surprising.

Well, at the very beginning of the article is says, "We just heard from a separate reliable source that Fox is possibly working on an origins story, as opposed to a straight-up remake. Still..."

So you could have another original story that involves the alien critters. We never knew where they were indigenous. The big buggers could show up on any kind of planet. Lots of possibilities.

Here's hoping.

Cameron and Scott wanted to do a film where we would get to see the alien's home planet. Hopefully the remake idea is jetisoned and Scott goes with something along the line what what him and Cameron where talking about. Exploring the alien's home planet could open up a lot of possiblities for the franchise.

And the better go R rated, none of this AVP PG-13 stuff ;)

I wouldn't mind something that takes it to the home planet, maybe even deal a little bit with the "space jockeys".

Earlier today, rumors were coming out of horror site Bloody-Disgusting that 20th Century Fox was interested in relaunching the "Alien" franchise with some sort of reboot or remake, following the recent news that Robert Rodriguez would be doing the same thing for 20th Century Fox's other sci-fi creature franchise, Predator. While there was no confirmation from the Fox camp or the trades, Collider's roving reporter "Frosty" cornered director Tony Scott at the press conference for his own remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 to get confirmation and learned that Scott-Free Productions is indeed producing a remake with director Carl Rinsch helming. They hope that the movie, which is meant act as a prequel to Ridley Scott's original 1979 classic Alien, will be shooting by the end of the year. The original Bloody-Disgusting story suggested that they would return to the original concept of just one alien creature, and that they'd be looking for a new "Ripley."

Prequel...one alien...Ripley? Are they fucking stupid? Unless Ripley is going to come in at the end it can't very well be a damned prequel.

Well, AVP apparently didn't screw up those franchises enough so now lets REALLY make sure we jam them both down the toilet with remakes and bullshit prequels. I mean really, I thought they couldn't fuck anything up more than Alien 3! Then we get 4...and then AVP.

Next you're going to tell me they are murdering the Terminator franchise...oh wait...I saw that piece of shit last week. :(

My childhood is being ass-raped in front of my eyes.

Oh wait, maybe the prequel could be on the homworld of the aliens with just the aliens. It could all be subtitled and Mel Gibson could direct.

Actually I think what he means by "Ripley" is another strong female lead, I don't think the character will necessarily be Ripley.

And hey, Alien 3 is alright, but Alien Resurrection is asshole.

No, no, no. When you cop out kill Newt and Hicks at the beginning of the movie, you are nowhere NEAR alright.

That was bullshit yeah, but outside of that, I kinda dig the film.

I'm with Mike on this, I like Alien 3. Sure it was dissapointing that Hicks was killed, but I still loved the film. I thought Fincher, as a first time director made the most out of a shitty deal. They really screwed him on that film, it's no wonder he wants nothing to do with Fox ( outside of Fight Club, but that was because of the material ).

A prequel might be interesting if it showed how the buggers got from their home planet to the planet in Alien. As I recall, the skeleton of the astronaut in the crashed ship full of eggs was not human. (Am I remembering correctly?) So a lot could be done with that, but it would have a real bummer of an ending.

As for Alien3, I seem to recall that was Sigourney's fault. She wanted to be the center of the story and she wanted it to be non-violent. She's anti-gun or something like that. I can't forgive them for killing off Hicks and Newt either.

To me the 1st Alien movie is like King Kong, Phantom of the Opera (Lon Chaney Sr.) and The Mummy (Karloff's not Brandon's) JUST LEAVE THEM THE HELL ALONE! You CAN NOT possibly make them better...leave them alone.

I have to agree. Some movies can have a good remakes, but most can't. It's all about fucking money now, nothing else. They get some shit director who says he's a HUGE fan of the original or the source material, then they fucking butcher it, and make lame excuses. Leave this stuff alone.

Robocop is another reboot/remake I wish would not happen. It was perfect for what it was supposed to be. I don't want some crappy remake. A sequel? Maybe, but not really.

Alien 3 is a film I HATED after seeing it in the theater, and I refused to watch it again for many, many years. Right up until I got the quadrilogy. I watched the re-edit special edition (because it was supervised by Charlie de Lauzirika who I think VERY highly of) and I liked it a whole lot more. Night and day for me.

Now, I absolutely LOVE the visuals in Alien 3. Fincher knocked it out of the park visually speaking. The script was shit, what there was of it, and killing Newt, Hicks, and Bishop was just foolish, but it wasn't Fincher's call. The reasoning was because Michael Biehn wouldn't sign on without a finished script, which they never had, and the girl who played Newt was MUCH older and they didn't feel recasting the role was viable. Hard choices, and complete mistakes in my book.

Alien 3 had more scripts commissioned and rejected than most films. Something like 30 scripts over a number of years were written and rejected. Then, they finally went with a german arthouse guy and the film was going to be on a wooden planet run by monks.

In the end, they shot a lot of the film with no script, sets which were built from the monk script, which is why the dialogue is so heavily laced with F-bombs, and why the prisoners have religion.

And Ressurection was a case of a great script being ruined by a director who didn't speak the same language as many of his cast and crew. Joss Whedon's script was much better than the final film. I've often wondered, after seeing Firefly and Serenity if The Betty, and it's crew were not precursors to Firefly. Johner/Jayne The captain and his warrior woman first mate, etc. Call/Kaylee. I would still like to see the studio call Joss in for an Alien film.

Anyway. :)

I didn't know all that about Joss Whedon and the third Alien film ... that would have been something to see ... and I think you are right about the similarities ... B)

Another remake / remodel / reboot / rehash...?

Oh boy, this is so depressing.

I'm privileged to work in the comic industry. I get to collaborate and socialise with bright and imaginative people, all of whom are brimming with amazing, exciting and original ideas. But their concepts inevitably get passed over in favour of products with "brand recognition".

And yet ticket sales continue to fall...

Come on, Hollywood: put two and two together. Show people stuff they haven't seen before... invest in some new ideas and talent. It may take time to build a new brand, but the long term benefits (and profits) could be immense. Sure it's a risk, but no riskier than churning out the same old shit for diminishing audiences, as Terminator : Salvation's returns have shown.

Grrrrr. Rant over, people.

I loved Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3 and absolutely hated Resurrection  but I find it pretty easy to ignore the latter. I'm just gonna ignore this one too. I used to get really pissed off about remakes and shitty pointless sequels, but now that they are so rampant, I just pretend they don't exist.... until years later when they pop up on cable TV at 1 am and my curiosity gets the better of me!

Amen Chris! Or at least for God's sake, use some of those ideas from comics to base your pre-existing films on. Case in point, "Burning Earth" or the NOW Terminator series would have made a fantastic T4. The AVP comics would have been GREAT as a film instead of the crap we got...and how about the countless other Alien, Predator and Terminator stories out there that would make for great film.

Don't even get me started on Punisher.

Here you have examples where the script and story boards are near written for a feature film in the form of a comic and they are just completely ignored.

The ANSWER is indepedent film!!! And I mean TRULY independent.
