DC Comics unveils first openly gay superhero

Recommended Posts

London, Feb 11 : DC Comics' first openly gay superhero is a sapphic socialite called Batwoman.

Taking over from Bruce Wayne is a flame-haired lesbian crime-fighter who suffered an untimely demise in a recent issue of Detective Comics' longest-running series, reports The Telegraph.

For over 60 years, Wayne has fronted the iconic Batman publication.

His apparent passing has paved the way for Batwoman - who is described as a "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night" - to take over the reigns for at least 12 issues in a run that begins this June.

Writer Greg Rucka told the Comic Book Resources website that the introduction of a lesbian character into the DC roster was "long overdue".

"We have been waiting to unlock her. Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character," he added.

He further dismissed fears of a possible backlash from fans.

"If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue", Rucka said.

"That's certainly not mine," he added.

Batwoman - whose alter ego is Katherine "Kate" Kane - was introduced into the DC character stable in 1956 as a love interest for the Dark Knight. Her appearance helped stifle persisting rumours about Batman's own sexuality.

How do you heal a fanboy's broken heart? Lesbians. Or at least that what's DC Comics is hoping.

After ejecting Batman from a plane to his certain death two months ago, DC has announced that they are replacing him with Batwoman, a red-headed, stiletto-wearing "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night." Batwoman — and her alter ego Kathy Kane — will be the subject of at least 12 issues of Detective Conics beginning in June, marking the first major storyline for a gay character in DC's history.

The character was first introduced in 1956, but her modern "outed" incarnation is only a couple years old. Writer Greg Rucka insists her sexuality is incidental to the character. "Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character. If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue," he told the U.K.'s Independent newspaper.

Rucka also noted that future editions of the comic may focus on Catwoman and Damien, Batman's purported son — that is, until they decide that it's just best to bring Batman back to life.

Ever since these event comics (Final Crisis, Secret Invasion, Civil War, etc) took over, I haven't picked up a single issue of any of the main DC or Marvel titles in years.

Didn't even know Batman is "dead." Let alone has a son.

Somebody at DC is smoking buckets of crack. It always goes SO WELL when they try and replace Batman with an unknown, or lesser known character.

GREAT IDEA!!

And Rucka's attitude about it isn't going to help sell the idea to fans either.

Yeah...this worked so well with Azrael back when the whole back broken thing happened.

Although sprinkling the comic with lesbian porn might actually subscribe to the title...so I'm torn. :)

Is this for real? Really? In the words of Dr. Sam Beckett (Quantum Leap) "Oh Boy..."
