COWBOY BEBOP

Recommended Posts

About six months ago, we reported on a rumor that Keanu Reeves might play Spike Spiegel in an upcoming live-action English adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. We’re now hearing confirmation from Variety and THR that Reeves will indeed play Spiegel for Fox’s upcoming film, with a script by Peter Craig.

As Peter Sciretta wrote back in July, Sinichiro Watanabe’s popular Japanese anime is set in the year 2071 A.D. when an cataclysmic astral gate accident has scattered humanity across the solar system. Bebop follows a group of bounty hunters, called “Cowboys”, on the spaceship Bebop. Spiegel is a bounty hunter and a former member of the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate, who is haunted by the memory of his time in the organization. The anime has spawned an animated movie, two manga series, and two video games.

The show’s creators will be involved in the creation of the film, with Kenji Uchida and Shinichiro Watanabe (from Bebop’s Japanese animation company Sunrise) associate producing along with series writer Keiko Nobumoto. Masahiko Minami, a producer onCowboy Bebop, has also signed on to the film as a production consultant.

I think Reeves would make for a fine star in the film adaptation, but is it just me or has Hollywood demonstrated an alarming lack of sense for what makes anime successful in the first place, and how to translate that to the big screen?

Aw man, this had better be a good adaptation, or I'll be forced to use harsh language.

Casting of Keanu seems alright to be (although he might be a bit too old for the part now). I always thought Cillian Murphy would make a good Spike, he's got the right look/physique and he's a damn good actor.

Can't wait too see the inevitable FHM photoshoot for whomever they cast as 'Faye Valentine' :-)

Not sure about the writer Peter Craig, I've not seen anything he's written, so I'm hoping he's just a huge fan who decided to try adapt it, rather than being a hack who was drafted in to make sure the script/story ticked a bunch of boxes for the producers.

I guess the casting of Keanu in a kung fu japanese animation adaption will get everyone talking about the Wachowski

Brothers, but lets hope they make a more inspired choice than that eh! Thoughts anyone?

i don't have a problem with keanu reeves being cast as spike but apparently all the anime fans are up in arms about it. i think it really comes down to who writes it. i hope it's great. i'm not much of an anime fan but cowboy bebop was just an awesome show and i'm a little excited about this. they say that Sunrise is actually co producing so things are looking up.

I think he'll be fine as spike, it's not like the character is blonde and from the UK.

;)

I'm a really, really BIG bebop fan...I think Reeves is perfect for the role. I'm geeked!

I'm unashamedly a fan of Reeves (although I'll admit he's had his short-comings in a few roles), but I don't know. The idea of having Keanu in a Sci-Fi/Kung Fu adaptation just seems a little uninspired to me.
